Overview

SMART Notebook is the software used with SMART Boards (interactive whiteboards). Currently, SMART Notebook 11 is on most teacher and student laptops. SMART Notebook works similarly to Microsoft Word or PowerPoint, in that you have multiple page layout and text editing options, with the added benefit of interactivity and a huge gallery of tools at your fingertips. In addition, SMARTExchange is a website that serves as a warehouse of lessons written by teachers and professionals that you may download, edit and use at your convenience. Multiple Means of Representation

SMART Notebook is a wonderful tool to provide multiple means of representation. Built into SMART Notebook is the Gallery, which houses almost 7000 icons, images, interactive tools and backgrounds. SMART Notebook allows you to capture your student audience with a variety of consistent visuals to aide in the intake of information.
When using the SMART Notebook for Representation, consider these ways to use features of Notebook to provide Multiple Means of Representation:

colorful fonts and backgrounds
use the same background color for all of your math lessons, the same color/easy to read LARGE font for your lesson objectives
pictures/icons
use pictures (and record your voice) whenever possible in lessons; use interactive dice, images of actual math manipulative before your math lesson
tacks
 
tack up your lesson goals and examples on one side to keep up while students are working
graphic organizer use the interactivity to create graphic organizers that move as your class explores concepts

Multiple Means of Expression

SMART Notebook can be used for student presentations, recordings, videos and more. Students can use Notebook on their own laptops and present their project, idea or lesson on the SMART Board.

Extreme Collaboration
a new tool, Extreme Collaboration allows students to participate from their seat and share their thoughts onto the class SMART Board

students can use Notebook as a presentation tool

Extreme Collaboration
Extreme Collaboration is a new tool from SMART that allows students to send an image or text directly to your SMART Notebook file via a web browser. If you have Notebook on your computer, Extreme Collaboration is a plug in that you can download.

SMART Notebook is a natural way to Engage students in their learning.  Consider using the SMART Board as a learning station for students to benefit from the built-in interactivity.

have students take data and notes and move it around to aide in the visualization of a concept
dual touch (on newer SMART Boards)
