Description

PL-CI-110  Straight from the Source: Close Readings for Elementary Social Studies (3-5)

Thursday, April 27, 2017                                3:45 p.m. – 6:15 p.m.

Total:  2.5 hours

One of the challenges of teaching social studies in grades 3-5 is finding engaging, relevant source texts that students can access.  Straight from the Source is a collection of grade-level-edited texts and activities designed by Primary Source that will boost students' close reading skills while holding their interest!  Join Primary Source's program directors as they share new resources that introduce topics from the Massachusetts curriculum and cultivate Common Core literacy skills as well as historical thinking skills.

After exploring the components of the curricula, we'll look at text types and how to adapt them, supporting materials for creating a "mini-unit" from each source, writing text-dependent questions, and sequencing and implementing the curricula with students of varying skill levels. You'll leave with a batch of new teaching materials specific to your grade level social studies curriculum and a clear picture of how to use the materials to excite your students about social studies.
