Big Backyard Background
The Big Backyard program uses nature walks to provide hands-on learning in science and social studies, while incorporating writing, math, and art as well as the student's own natural curiosity. These walks are designed specifically for Hastings by naturalist Bev Morrison, recipient of the Massachusetts Excellence in Environmental Education award. Parent volunteers lead small groups of 4 to 6 students on walks in the Hastings schoolyard. Volunteers get training for their specific walks and are given all the necessary supplies. No experience is required! Click here to view a short video that details the BBY program or visit the BBY section of the LPS homesite for more information.
Becoming a BBY volunteer is a wonderful way for parents to share in their child's education. BBY is completely run by parent volunteers and we hope you will continue to support BBY this coming school year. Each class needs 4-5 BBY parent volunteers to lead walks and a BBY Room Coordinator who will coordinate the walk schedule with the teacher and walk leaders. To volunteer to be a Big Backyard Room Coordinator or Walk Leader, or to find out more about BBY, please contact the school.
Over 70 Hastings parents took our kids outdoors last year, and many of you are doing it again this year. We always welcome new volunteers and don't expect you to know things before you come to a training. Thank you your interest in Big Backyard!
