This week in ELA, we are targeting current event non-fiction reading. We are practicing reading articles this week about topical events including Halloween Safety, Pumpkin Carving, and Awesome Costumes. We are focused on answering wh- questions while looking back into the text. We are practicing using the strategy of looking for key words in the question and highlighting answerings while we read.

    Week of October 23, 2017

This week in ELA, we are exploring some non-fiction pieces including current events. We are reading connected pieces and identifying the key information. In addition, we are reading the last two chapters in our Rules and Government unit. We are learning the difference between a rule and a law. We will also be learning about who makes the laws.

    Week of October 16, 2017

This week in ELA, we are doing lots of writing! We are practicing writing letters to our old 5th grade friends. This is helping to reinforce answering Wh- questions as well as write in complete sentences. In addition, we are working in Ancient Civilizations to write our conclusions or inferences using evidence. We examined artifacts and thought about what we could observe and infer about that particular object. Overall, great work!

    Week of October 10, 2017

This week in ELA, we are wrapping up our unit on antonyms. Students will pick their 5 favorite pairs and illustrate them to create their own antronym book. We will be targeting writing skills during Science this week telling about the experiment we did last week. We will also be practicing our comprehension skills as we wrap up setting rules for the beginning of school.

    Extension:

Be sure to keep reading at home! Let Ms. Maus know if you need a new book or help getting a book. We can also use digital text if you like too!

    Week of October 2, 2017

This week in ELA, we are targeting our antonym unit. We have learned the antonyms to 16 words and are generalizing what we know to other sets of words. In addition, we are practicing our comprehension with our Laws and Government reading. This week we are reading about the rules Paige and Tiffany's class set and setting our own class rules. We are also working on writing to say on topic and give information.
