As in years past, fifth graders at Fiske are participating in the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award program. The program is sponsored by Salem State University and is intended to encourage students to read or listen to quality children's literature for enjoyment.

Information about the program and a list of books nominated for the 2018 MCBA program are available at: Salem State University.  Students must read or listen to at least 5 books from the list between now and early March 2018 in order to be eligible to vote for their favorites in a statewide poll. Students will write brief reading responses to the books they have read by completing the Reading Response link above. A link to the response form may also be found on the Fiske Catalog home page (see sidebar on left of this page).  At the beginning of March, students who are eligible will vote and the votes will be tallied and sent to Salem State University. A winning title and a few honor books will be announced in April.  In addition, students who read 20 or more MCBA titles by early June will be invited to have lunch with Mrs. Conant in the Fiske Library!

Thanks to the Fiske PTO, copies of the 2018 MCBA books are available in the Fiske Library and can also be found through the public library. Additionally, a set of the 25 books will be in each fifth-grade classroom. All of the books are available in paperback, many are available as eBooks and digital audio through the Fiske Library (see eBooks and Audio Books link on left).  If your fifth grader needs a refresher on how to access digital titles through the Fiske Library catalog, please have them come see me or email me for directions.

I hope you will encourage your child to participate in this program. Perhaps you can read one or more of the books together as a read-aloud, or enjoy one in audiobook format!  If you have any questions regarding this program, please don’t hesitate to ask.

    Happy reading!
