  • About:

KeepVid is a free online service that allows you to download online videos (from YouTube, TeacherTube, etc.) for future use in your classroom.

You do not need to download or purchase the KeepVid software (though this is an option) ...
Simply follow the directions outlined below to use the online video download feature.
Videos are a wonderful way to reach multiple kinds of learners, presenting material
in multiple formats, building background knowledge, transitioning students and invoking their schema.
Online videos provide a wide array of educational topics and presentations - however ...
streaming these resources directly from another website impacts network bandwidth available for everyone.

When using online videos, it is imperative to responsibly manage such resources
to reduce district network impact and disruption.
BEST PRACTICE is to download online videos to your computer prior to classroom use.
This allows you to share it with your students directly from your computer -
eliminating the dreaded 'network not available', 'internet not available', 'video buffering' trio of disasters.
Additional Reasons to download videos rather than streaming live:
      • a video site may be blocked at school - eliminating streaming as an option
      • downloading a video ensures it will be available when you need to use it (whether the internet is available or not)
      • Using a downloaded video eliminates advertisements and additional visuals that can surround videos (and distract students) on web-based pages

Discovery Streaming and other subscription services offer easy downloading with the simple click of a button.

YouTube and other free online video sources
do not offer downloading on most videos,
but KeepVid provides an easy to use option:

To download a video using KeepVid,
    1)  Copy the web address of the video you want
(when using YouTube, select the SHARE button, below the video.)
    2)  Once you have copied the web address (Command+C or Edit-Copy),
    3)  Go to KeepVid (online):  http://keepvid.com/
The KeepVid interface will look like this:

You may be asked about allowing a Java Applet  (see below).    Click Allow.
    java applet dialog box
You may need to 'Allow' once more:
    java dialog 2
Once the applet loads you will receive choices for the video format:
    KeepVid output format options
M4V is often a good choice, as it works on computers, ipads, phones, etc.
The higher the number (1080p vs. 720p) the better the resolution and the larger the resulting file.
Downloaded files will appear in your DOWNLOADS folder, unless you have set-up your computer differently.
When opened, these videos will play in Quicktime.
